The Department of Economics was established in 1983-84. From the inception to 2006 Smt. J. Vasanta Kumari was the Head of the department of Economics. She enriches the department with her a vast experience, she conducted many guest lectures, seminars and A.P Economic association regional conferences. She was promoted as principal in 2006. From 2006 onwards Dr. G. Pramila Kumari Headed the department till date. Smt. G. Padmavathi worked as faculty member up to 2010. At present Kum. V. Dhana Lakshmi is working from 2010 onwards. The department members have the research experience. We participate in teaching Business Economics to B.Com. students and Economic Theory to B.B.M., students along with our B.A., curriculum. The Department undertakes the Inter-disciplinary Certificate Course on Insurance. We also teach foundation course to B.Sc., and B.Com. students.
We run the department with a Mission and Vision. Mainly we want to make our students good citizens and good professionals in the subject with up to date knowledge. We introduced project works as part of curriculum so that the students get practical knowledge of the society. The department involves in conducting surveys on burning issues to know the pulse of the society and the report is sent to the authorities concerned. We insist on the empowerment of women by arranging guest lectures by eminent persons on important topics and burning issues. We also conduct panel discussions and class room seminars.
In order to inculcate the habit of book reading we encourage the students to utilize the library. We believe in overall personality development. To bring out the latent talents of the students the department conduct co-curricular and extracurricular competitions to the economic students.
The department involved in the Adult Literacy Programme which is one of the Millennium Development Goals. Introduced Drip Irrigation in the college campus to grow vegetables and leafy vegetables to demonstrate the water saving methods.
Dr. G. Pramila Kumari has international exposure. She presented seminar papers in various International, National and Regional Seminars. She acquired other qualifications also to enhance her knowledge and contributes to the society through some NGO’s. She gives research guidance to M. Phil Scholars and is a lesson writer for the First Year Post Graduation Course (Micro Economics).
